Sex solves Haldane’s dilemma
Donal A. Hickey and G. Brian Golding
Sexual reproduction involves the random shuffling of genes. As a result, each sexual offspring is genetically unique, with the exception of monozygotic twins. Although this consequence of sexual reproduction is well understood, it is less clear why it should be ubiquitous in nature. This work points out that sex facilitates rapid evolutionary adaption, especially in those cases where natural selection is acting on many genes simultaneously. A sexual population can explore an enormous number of potential genetic combinations and it can efficiently arrive at the optimal combination. This provides a powerful evolutionary advantage for sexual reproduction.»Read more...
Genome Publication Award
Established by the Genome editorial board and its publisher, Canadian Science Publishing (CSP), the Genome Publication Award recognizes 10 outstanding contributions each year. The award recognizes publications that make substantial and far-reaching contributions in genetics and genomics. Honorees receive an award of $250CDN and their papers, initially published in regular issues, are collated in a free open-access virtual issue along with an optional biography of the author(s).
The selection of the recipient is determined by the Editorial board of Genome. For more information, please contact the Co-Editors-in-Chief, Melania Cristescu and Lewis Lukens at genome@cdnsciencepub.com
New special issue “Trends in DNA Barcoding and Metabarcoding”
This open access special issue features 12 articles representing emerging trends in DNA barcoding and metabarcoding. A prominent theme is the movement towards big biodiversity data using high-throughput, individual-based DNA barcoding methods. Moreover, metabarcoding methods based on multi-kingdom, multi-marker approaches are also gaining traction. Several papers focus on how DNA-based techniques are used to study Africa’s biodiversity.»Read more...
Just-IN
Just-IN manuscripts are pdf versions of authors’ accepted manuscripts prior to copy editing and page composition. Although considered published, Just-IN manuscripts are not the official version of record and can be substantially different from the final version. Note also that the translation of the abstract will be posted only with the official version of record. For more information, visit our FAQ page on Just-IN manuscripts.
e-First Articles
e-First articles have undergone copy editing, page composition, and correction by the author but have not yet been assigned to an issue. They represent the version of record and are citable. Only in exceptional cases will corrections be made to e-First articles and only before they are paginated and included in an issue.
